Family Vacation: San Diego

I Am Little K by Katarina Kovacevic: Family Vacation in San Diego

Growing up in Phoenix, most of your vacations are spent in Southern California. A couple of weeks ago, we took our first family vacation to San Diego.

Actually, we piggybacked on my brother and sister-in-law's family vacation and crashed for a long weekend at a house they rented in Del Mar for the week. (YAY, FAMILY!)

It was the perfect excuse and time to get out of town. Phoenix just had its first heatwave of the summer (115+ degrees!) and San Diego's 70-degree temperatures were a short road trip away. It was our first long car ride with Te, so we prepared accordingly.

We're a Babywise household, so my goal was to keep to Te's schedule as much as possible while on the road. For those of you wondering how I did this, here it is...

At that point, she was still waking around 5 a.m. for a feed so we decided we'd take off at that time in the hopes that she'd fall asleep again in the car until her normal 7 a.m. wake-up time. She did! (Hallelujah, Babywise.)

In order to stay on track while she was strapped to her car seat, I made sure to clearly distinguish between "play" time and "sleep" time. We'd stop to change and feed her, then it was back in the car with her soft baby mirror and a toy. About 15 minutes before she was due for a nap, I'd swap the toy for her lovey and the pacifier, nix the mirror, and then turn on her portable sound machine.

I'd talk and play with her during wake time, then give her space and quiet for naps. Not only did she keep to her regular eat, wake, sleep cycle during the drives, but she actually napped longer than she does in her crib because of the car's movement. It worked out well.

As is usually the case, Te showed me that my excessive worry was unnecessary.

The first thing we did when we arrived at the Del Mar house was take Te on a nice walk around the neighborhood. She fell asleep...and we took the opportunity for a scenic wine break. The rest of the weekend was everything you'd want in a first family vacation - casual and laidback, relaxing...lots of fun.

Te had lots of playtime with her cousin Jack. Mama and Tata had lots of good food and wine with the rest of the "adults." We soaked in as much of Del Mar as possible and even took Te to the beach for her first toe-dip into the ocean.

She wasn't a fan of the cold water and didn't know what to do with herself when the breeze would blow. Desert Baby. But she loved to roll around outside (she's rolling now!). We tried a couple of local restaurants, ordered in a lot and cooked a bit at the house. The SoCal beach life mesmerized us so much that we decided to stay an extra night.

Del Mar restaurants we loved: Jake's Del Mar, Stratford Court Cafe, Prepkitchen, Poseidon and Beesalt Balcony. Didn't get to try but heard great things about: Board & Brew and Cafe Secret.

Croatia's heartbreaking loss in the UEFA Euros aside, it was the perfect weekend. The rest of the summer hopefully holds one or two trips to northern AZ and a few in-town hotel stays. We'll see.

All of the times Te "couldn't even" with the wind in San Diego:
