Photo Tour: Samobor

Style Jaunt - Photo Tour: Samobor, Croatia

This is the Kremšnita (krem-sh-neeta). It is delicious and decadent and sweet and fantastic. It's also the sole reason we made the 30-minute drive west from Zagreb to the tiny, storybook town of Samobor.

Literally translating to "cream slice," the vanilla and custard cream dessert is a specialty in this region of Croatia and Samobor is supposed to have the best kremšnita around. We visited with family who took us to a quaint streetside cafe called Saramassi. This, they said, was supposed to be the best of the best. I've tasted many a kremšnita, but this was for sure the standout.

Delicious dessert aside, I am so glad we took this unexpected excursion. Samobor is painfully charming, like a Grimm's fairytale come to life (but without the frightening, twisted story morals). As I walked the cobblestone streets, I half expected a red-hooded girl to skip by, a basket of fresh-baked goods on her arm. But, alas, the only one skipping was me...

If you get the chance to visit Samobor, taste the kremšnita. Visit the small shops, especially Angelus Beatus for handmade cloth dolls and sweet aprons. Using the stream as your guide, wind your way through Old Town and along the tree-lined promenade. Stop to take a picture on the wooden bridge with the Samobor Hills as your backdrop. Go slow. Take it all in.
