Expert Tips: Kendra Scott's Travel-Inspired Jewelry

Kendra Scott
In 2002, with just $500, Kendra Scott launched a small jewelry collection that's since grown into a multimillion dollar brand you'll find at top shops like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, as well as specialty boutique retailers around the world. You may have even spotted her bold designs on Hollywood starlets like Sofia Vergara and Cameron Diaz.

This sharp and sweet Texas gal still calls Austin home, but recent expansion - into markets like Beverly Hills, my home state of Arizona (Scottsdale!) and right here in New York City - has taken Kendra around the country. As soon as I laid eyes on Kendra's striking designs in the new Tropic Chic collection, I immediately thought of a seaside escape. Turns out, Kendra finds a lot of inspiration in travel!

I love the bright colors in your Tropic Chic collection! What inspired you to create this line?

Last summer I went on an incredible trip to Bali. I was so inspired that both my latest Tropic Chic Collection and Summer Collection, which will launch this spring, arose from my travels there. I brought back so many ideas from the amazing culture, architecture, people and geography of the island to my design team and together we created collections based on that experience. Our Tropic Chic Collection infuses palm-etched silhouettes with bright hues and modern lines. With bold, vibrant colors like our Saffron colorway mixing cobalt and yellow and Fig colorway pairing coral with pink, it is one of our most lively and fun collections to date.

Where have some of your recent travels taken you?

I absolutely love to travel and I’m always on the go. As I said, last summer I spent a lot of time vacationing in Bali and I absolutely fell in love with the island’s rich culture. More recently, I have been traveling to cities across the United States to scout locations for future Kendra Scott stores, like the one opening at Fashion Island in Newport Beach this spring.

Do your travels play into your designs at all?
My travels have always been hugely influential on my designs. I strive for my jewelry to constantly and dynamically evolve, so I am always on the hunt for inspiration!

What is your favorite thing about travel?

Aside from the long plane flights, I absolutely love everything about traveling. Truly immersing yourself in another culture is such an enriching and enlightening experience. I believe that if you have the opportunity, it is so important to explore the world and expose yourself to other people and cultures as much as you can.

Do you have an all-time favorite destination?

Italy is one of my favorite places in the world. I was able to take my two boys there not long ago, and that’s a trip I’ll never forget! It was so special to share that with them.

What about hotels or resorts?
Le Sirenuse in Postiano, Italy is an absolutely gorgeous hotel – the rooms are incredible, complete with ornate decorations with an Old World feel and it’s right on the bay, so the views are breathtaking.

Are you a beach, city or mountain escape kind of girl?

I find beauty in every place that I travel, but I’m definitely a beach type of girl. My job takes me to many incredible cities across the nation and world, so when I’m ready to relax and unwind, a gorgeous turquoise beach, white sand and delicious cocktail is my kind of bliss.

What is your typical airport outfit?

Living in Austin for so many years, I have mastered the art of casual chic style, and this is how I dress when I’m at the airport. A cozy pair of jeans, comfortable boots or flats and a flowy top are my go-to’s when I’m catching a flight. I always remember to pack a cardigan, too, because planes are cold no matter the time of year. Of course, I always add jewelry to give my laid back look a pop of pizzazz.

Speaking of on-the-go jewelry, any tips for keeping your accessories organized, neat and safe while traveling?

I had a custom jewelry travel bag made a few years ago and now I don’t know what I’d do without it. It has several individual compartments for each of my pieces, so it’s easy to find what I need and I don’t have to worry about them getting tangled. It’s also compact – it rolls up and hangs so I can have easy access and view my jewels in the hotel room. We are currently working on making our own jewelry travel bag, so stay tuned!

What is your travel beauty routine like?

I have small travel size containers so I can easily store things like my shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion. I also have this amazing lip-gloss with a mirror and an LED light attached to it, so I can put it on wherever I am, and it always goes with me when I’m traveling. You never know who you may meet when traveling, so it’s important to always have your best asset prepared – your smile!
